About the Event
In the All Subjects Class we'll be painting a variety of subjects which is great practice for a painter, studying light and shadow, value, color mixing, all that fun stuff. In the Portrait Class we'll be studying all of that too of course but as to how it effects the human face. We'll consider different lighting conditions and flesh tone mixes and many other factors like how to get a likeness. You can paint along with me or choose your own reference.
I've put together a growing collection of over 500 reference images for you to choose from, some I've shot myself, many I've paid for and collected over the years from stock, pro and friend photographers. Some are from free use sources online that I'll clue you in on.
I'll also show you how to set up and shoot your own reference and how to increase your chances of having a more successful painting just by using better source, whether it's a photo or a live set up.
Since it's a Zoom class I can't do what I usually do and walk around the room to assist students with their work and demo the techniques right on your canvas, so what I do instead is paint right along with you and demo on my canvas. It's absolutely not necessary to paint the same image that I'm painting to learn the techniques, I make sure to repeat and demonstrate these techniques over and over again.
I have cameras on my painting, my palette and on me the entire time so you never miss a thing.
I want to help you become the painter you want to be and most importantly I'd like to help you learn how to enjoy painting rather than be frustrated when you sit down to work. We'll concentrate on color values and color mixing. Week by week you'll add whatever tools, knowledge, and techniques you need to get where you want to go.
I'll meet you where you are, whether it's absolute beginner, advanced, or somewhere in between. Most people can't believe how improved they feel their work is after just a few classes. These are techniques we're learning in here, they've been handed down for centuries, they just take a bit of practice to master. Time and patience and you'll have it. It's not magic, no one is born knowing this stuff. Trust me, anyone who wants to can paint, it just takes patience and practice.
I've had students come in that didn't think they had talent and within a couple weeks we've discovered they had a sense of color that was mind blowing or their brush strokes were masterful and they were painting up a storm in no time. It's always amazing to see where people's hidden talents lie. If you have the desire to paint, that's what matters. We can all do this and enjoy it. Painting is good for the soul.
I'll share my knowledge freely and openly with you and from there it's just a matter of practice — and this is why a weekly painting group is so important, it gives you that practice in a fun setting with friends.
